Quote, unquote

If you are one of those who puzzle over just what "creating community" means in terms of the web and publishing magazines, here is a provocative and interesting take from Bambi Franciso of Dow Jones Market Watch:
The Web has become an archipelago of tiny villages tied together not by proximity but by interests. In the old-style town square, passionate, informed people came together to debate and share news and create dialogue. Today the Web is that square.
Traditional media have lost their monopoly on journalism, most people agree. And more and more, everyday citizens will be plying the trade -- once they find the village they want to be part of.
She was disagreeing with the book by Andrew Keen, whose jermiad The Cult of the Amateur: How the Democratization of the Digital World Is Assaulting Our Economy, Our Culture and Our Values. says that, with an estimated 500 million blogs by 2010, public discourse on everything from politics and commerce to the arts will become corrupted and confused.)

So, if you're wondering how, or if, you should be finding ways to involve your readers in your magazine, beyond being passive consumers, now's apparently the time to start.
