12 lawyers who bear watching featured in Nexus, the U of T law school alumni mag

Nexus, the alumni magazine for the University of Toronto faculty of law, has a feature in its current issue called The Decade Dozen -- 12 alumni who bear watching as they build their careers over the next decade.
Each lawyer, 10 - 20 years out of school,  is profiled by Nexus executive editor Lucianna Ciccocioppo. The candiates were nominated by the magazine's readers. [A digital edition of the magazine can be downloaded.]
Turning the spotlight away from the newest grads, we decided tofind out where the nascent superstar alumni are today (10-20 years post-graduation), those with distinctly promising careers who are set to shape and influence their professions this decade.
The twice-yearly  magazine goes to some 7,000 alumni, faculty and friends who may be interested to know that it is now accepting advertising.
The feature  bears some similarity to the annual Precedent-Setter Awards that were started by Precedent magazine, highlighting young lawyers who are making a difference in the profession.

Have you looked at the Precedent Setter layout and the layout for Nexus? Clearly not. You can't really compare them. The Nexus one is so much nicer!

I have looked at both; my comparison was not about the design but about the concept, which is very similar: profiling promising young lawyers and the difference they are making in the profession. As for design, I like them both.

You can draw that conclusion, but if you are going to do that with these two magazines you should be doing that with all magazines out there. Whether it is a a housing issue, money issue, promising young lawyers issue, political issue etc. Most magazines cover the same stuff that other magazines do...some just do it better than others.

I don't see how that follows. I merely pointed out that Precedent had done a similar thing; it wasn't a critique of either of them. And I certainly don't feel an obligation to do the same every time I mention any magazine. Clearly you feel strongly about this, and now you have me wondering why. All I did was provide the reader with that little bit of context. Presumably they will draw their own conclusions if they link to the site(s).

The fact that you have drawn that conclusion regarding both Precedent and Nexus has me wondering D.B. What is your connection to both?

I sit on the advisory board of Precedent, but have nothing do do with editorial or design. I have nothing to do with Nexus. Now, turn about, who are you and what relationship have you had with either of these magazines?

I have no connection with either...I am a Law Student at UofT.

We love reading Precedent magazine--Melissa Kluger is our alum! But I should tell you that the Decade Dozen was one year in the making, and we conceptualized the idea even before that, long before the first Precedent-Setter awards went out. Since we are a bi-annual publication, our lead times are very long...Appreciate your interest in Nexus!
Best, Lucianna
